My First Encounter with Dragon Fruit

Hurricane Irene turned out to be a bit of a disappointment in my area — not that I’m complaining. After a night of lots of water and wind, I woke up to find that my power didn’t even go off.

Driving to the market to survey the damage (of which, there was little) and pick up some fruit, I spotted something that looked like an alien egg. The sign above it clarified that it wasn’t an egg, but something called dragon fruit. Intrigued, I bought one, brought it home, and chopped it up.

Googling around, I found out that dragon fruit is similar to kiwi. Cutting it in half, you find a soft white flesh with black seeds.

While the texture of the flesh itself was similar to a kiwi, it wasn’t at all sweet as I had imagined it to be. It could’ve been that specific one and hopefully the other one I bought will be a little tastier. But as it stands, I probably won’t go out of my way to buy more of this interesting looking fruit.

  1. Hmmmm — I’ve always wondered about dragon fruit, but I think you saved me a bit of pain — I don’t think I will be trying one any time soon! Thank you for this post!
