J.K. Rowling Announces ‘Pottermore’

There have been mumblings about the web about this new website called ‘Pottermore‘. Today, J.K. Rowling unveiled more info.

With a single viewing of the video, it’s a little nebulous as to exactly what this new website is, but she mentions a “safe, unique online reading experience” where you can “share, participate in, and rediscover the stories”. In addition, it’s the only place to purchase e-books of the Harry Potter series. So reducing it down, it seems to be an e-book store with social networking involved.

I think the most interesting tidbit is that Rowling is going to sharing “additional information [she’s] been hoarding for years about the world of Harry Potter”.

In a New York Times article, they explain that

The project unveiled in London lets Potter fans delve into the world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Sections let users shop for wands in Diagon Alley, travel to Hogwarts from the imaginary Platform 9 3/4 at London’s King’s Cross train station and be sorted into Hogwarts school houses by the perceptive Sorting Hat.

Along the way are wand fights, games and new information about characters beloved around the world, including Harry’s reviled relatives, the Dursleys.

There are a lot of ways that blurb can be interpreted — I guess the real question is how exactly is this website going to be presented. Will people create avatars and will the experience be like an MMO? Or maybe and it’ll be more like an online forum, with people just making screen names / handles, posting in threads based upon each of the books. I guess we’ll see once the actual website is revealed.
