On Dream Theater Losing Mike Portnoy

I can’t really imagine what lies in the future for Dream Theater, my favorite band. Last week, Mike Portnoy announced he would be leaving the band. Apparently they’re still going to record a new album in January of 2011, but who knows how the band will sound. Losing such an integral member of the band, let alone a founding member of 25 years, has got to be difficult. Keyboardist Jordan Rudess chose to express his thoughts on it in the following video.

If there’s any silver lining to this black cloud (ba dum, pish!), it’s anticipation for their next album. I’m intensely curious to hear what they’ll sound like with a different drummer, if they change much at all. But until they record and release their next album, there’s no use for any further speculation. Instead, I choose to just bask in the sheer awesomeness of their live performances.
