Eva Cassidy – Songbird

And on the other side of the death metal growl, you might find the dulcet voice of Eva Cassidy.

Believe it or not, Songbird was the last album I acquired before Blackwater Park, and before that I think was Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor. But I digress.

I’ve been using Last.fm since about 2006 to chronicle every single track that I play through iTunes. It had recommended Eva Cassidy because I listen to a lot of Norah Jones (her older stuff, not so much her newer country tracks). The first song I heard was “Wade in the Water”. It’s a traditional song arranged with a jazzy back-beat — hooked me immediately. There’s a few Gospel tracks in this album and it may just get me hooked on Gospel next. The climax of “Oh, Had I a Golden Thread” where she starts belting knocked me out of my shoes.
